The controversy about this subject is heating up.
Opponents say that giving licenses to undocumented aliens is not correct because a driver's license is a privilege and not a right. Giving them a driver's license will give them another opportunity to break the law further because it legitimizes what they did to get here. It is tantamount to an amnesty. It will also give them a chance to take a legitimate job by using the driver's license as an identification provided by the government.
Supporters of the driver's license believe that the license will assure that the undocumented drivers pass the driving test to drive a car, will be better drivers and will be able to get insurance when they register a car that now may also be illegal on the road and unable to cover potential losses in case of accidents. It is also an opportunity to show those undocumented drivers what it is like to document their lives.
These are only some of the points. They are meant to be starting points. What do you think?
Please post your ideas here. Thanks.
